Serpentinite Weathering and Implications for Mars
Introduction: In the search for life on Mars nearsurface soil environments may be important habitats for life accessible to future missions. Serpentinite rocks have been documented on Mars [1], as well as other clay minerals including smectite and kaolinites [2, 3]. Previous studies of soils formed on serpentinites on Earth have documented the formation of extensive clays, including smectite [4...
متن کاملBacterial communities associated with subsurface geochemical processes in continental serpentinite springs.
Reactions associated with the geochemical process of serpentinization can generate copious quantities of hydrogen and low-molecular-weight organic carbon compounds, which may provide energy and nutrients to sustain subsurface microbial communities independently of the photosynthetically supported surface biosphere. Previous microbial ecology studies have tested this hypothesis in deep sea hydro...
متن کاملMetagenomic Evidence for H2 Oxidation and H2 Production by Serpentinite-Hosted Subsurface Microbial Communities
Ultramafic rocks in the Earth's mantle represent a tremendous reservoir of carbon and reducing power. Upon tectonic uplift and exposure to fluid flow, serpentinization of these materials generates copious energy, sustains abiogenic synthesis of organic molecules, and releases hydrogen gas (H(2)). In order to assess the potential for microbial H(2) utilization fueled by serpentinization, we cond...
متن کاملSubsurface Circulations within Active Regions
Using high-resolution ring analysis (HRRA) we deduce subsurface flows within magnetic active regions and within quiet sun. With this procedure we are capable of measuring flows with a horizontal spatial resolution of 2◦ in heliographic angle (or roughly 20 Mm). From the resulting flow fields we deduce mean inflow rates into active regions, mean circulation speeds around active regions, and prob...
متن کاملErosion and Weathering Processes in the Delaware River Basin
Total suspended sediments and the total dissolved solids (TDS) from three river gaging stations, near Delaware Water Gap, Riegelsville and Trenton on the Delaware River measured by the USGS were used to estimate the physical erosion, chemical weathering and total denudation rates of the Delaware River Basin. The denudation rates are 28 and 128 tons/km 2 /yr for the upper stream and downstream s...
